In September 1991, Jan Bucquoy was a man overwhelmed. Women were emancipating themselves—becoming business leaders, politicians, lawyers… increasingly powerful. He felt his world beginning to crumble. To preserve a trace of it, he created the “Museum of Woman,” by “freezing the image of her as we [men] invented her.” As a proper and dutiful museum curator, this act allowed him, in one final surge of authority, to collect, catalogue, number, and measure woman—turning her into an object of study according to the strict phallo-scientific methodology still in force at the time.
