Exhibition: ‘Reflections on the hole in the stone

For December 2024, Atelier 34zero Muzeum is launching a brand new exhibition entitled ‘the hole in the stone’.

Holes in stone are more than just a physical feature; they represent a profound exploration of matter and our perception of it. By developing a sense of the interior of stone, we discover a unique intimacy that brings us visually closer to this blocky material. What's more, the sum of the empty and the full creates a unique dialogue that questions the materiality of stone, in which the holes do not represent absences; on the contrary, from these holes emerge a whole reflection that is at once technical, symbolic and aesthetic. The holes in the stone allow us to play with light and shadow, between the fragility of the structure and the inherent solidity of the stone. Taking on stone with this particular approach means thinking about visibility through it. Creating a reflection in the stone, not on the stone, pushes us to understand the limits of its fragility. The resulting visual transparency, though paradoxical for such a solid material, reveals a new dimension. Fanning blocks of stone is not an act of destruction, but rather a way of exploring the transversality of the material. This approach reveals not only the raw beauty of stone, but also the complexity of its inner layers, offering us a new and enriching perspective.
